I am the biggest procrastinator, but I have said that I wanted to participate in NaNoWriMo to the best of my abilities this year. As a result, I need to begin to do a little brainstorming. Unfortunately, my brainstorming typically leads me to having too many ideas leading me to feel that I have no direction in my writing. I’m going to do some journaling here to process some of my initial thoughts, ideas and brainstorms and see where it leads me.
I am going to keep to my word and focus on a story that revolves around the winning first sentence from a while ago:
The first time my father took me to Giddindale, I couldn’t sleep for three days, certain that the moment I closed my eyes the ‘monsters’ would come and steal me away.
Look at that…I’ve already written 31 words and November hasn’t even started yet! I’m so ahead of the game.
Initially I wanted this to be nothing short of a true and classic fantasy. Giddindale is a magical world of fae who are divided into sects based on their magical inclinations: Earth, Water, Fire, Metal and Wood. Their world lies within the folds of the real world, more or less, distinguished only by the Elemental Tree. In my mind, I have created two parallel and colliding worlds that struggle to exist together.
The struggle stems from Ruler #1 (I don’t have names yet) of the human world. This is the father of our main character (also unnamed). She is raised to believe that the Fae are dangerous, unruly and violent. However, as she gets older, she is allowed to spend more and more time in Giddindale on political visits. Through these visits, she begins to meet and learn more about the Fae and more about what her father is truly doing.
The Elemental Tree lies on the border of Ruler #1 province and another one. However, based on something that Ruler #1’s family stole from the Fae generations earlier, Ruler #1 maintains a dominance over province #2 creating an almost dystopic society. The Fae’s elemental powers are able to be harnessed by Ruler #1 and thus weaken the Fae who serve to maintain the natural balance of, in essence, the world; however, the longer the fae go without some of their essential power sources, they become weaker, losing more and more control over the aspects of the world they are supposed to protect. Naturally, this could create catastrophic events that put both human and fae worlds in jeopardy.
As I put some structure to my thoughts and ideas and this premise begins to take better shape here on paper, the more I am excited to begin writing to see where the story takes me. I really feel excited about trying to blend a few of my absolute favorite genres.
But I need some help coming up with some names! This is apparently what I need to begin:
Province #1
Ruler #1
Main character (Female)
Province #2
Names I can use for Fae
Names I can use for humans
Have any creative names? Leave me a comment.
If I do ever finish this book, it will have an awesome map that will be drawn by my daughter. She’s super excited to help me on this little adventure. Maybe I can have her work on the map throughout November, and I can add those pictures to my blog updates here.
